Destined for the Extraordinary with Lacrosse

Currently the head coach of the Chinese Taipei Women's National Lacrosse Team, Sachiyo Yamada was the captain of her basketball team during junior high and high school in Japan, where she played at a very high level. She described her life as practicing basketball every day of the year, which led her to decide not to pursue basketball when she entered university. She chose a university that didn't have a basketball team, determined to be a "normal" student, enjoying campus life and focusing on her studies.

Upon entering university, without a basketball club, she was introduced to lacrosse by a friend and began a new sports career. What started as a casual interest quickly grew into a deep passion, eventually leading her to play lacrosse in Australia. What are the differences between lacrosse and basketball for Sachi? What led her into another sport? Basketball in Japan is a well-established sport with a deeply rooted system, offering players comprehensive training under a unified goal. In contrast, lacrosse is still a developing field, requiring players, coaches, and equipment to be self-sufficient, which Sachi found challenging and exciting. The satisfaction she gained from lacrosse differed from the relentless practice of her high school basketball days, leading her from wanting to be a "normal student" to embracing another "extraordinary" path due to her love for challenges.

Connecting with and Encouraging Taiwan Lacrosse

Between 2015 and 2016, Sachi was invited to coach in Hong Kong several times. In 2017 and 2018, after finishing the World Championship and returning to Japan from Australia, she received an invitation from Taiwan Lacrosse to lead the women's national team in preparation for the 2018 Women's World Championship. Promoting lacrosse in Asia was always Sachi's goal, so she immediately accepted the invitation. Coaching in Taiwan brought her immense joy as she met many lacrosse enthusiasts and strived to support the sport's development in any way possible. Leading the team through the World Championship, she felt the strong team spirit among Taiwanese players, which became an unforgettable memory. She observed that Taiwanese players are diligent and practice earnestly but tend to be shy. She encouraged them to have confidence, remain humble, not fear mistakes, and actively exchange ideas to foster personal and team growth. Sachi hoped the players would remember their feelings during the competitions and continue to thrive.

Balancing multiple roles herself, Sachi's planning and management are worth learning. For players to juggle work, skills, and studies, she advised them to set up a training plan, practice with a clear goal, and manage their time effectively to achieve greater progress with less effort.
